About Us
Established in 2007, the teachHOUSTON program was created to address the shortage of qualified math and science teachers in our country.
Modeled after a successful format at the University of Texas at Austin, teachHOUSTON is a new collaborative project of the University of Houston College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics, the College of Education, and local school districts.

Our Goals
- To attract and retain more and better students into secondary math, science, and computer science career paths.
- To establish an enriched pre-service curriculum that integrates modern technological teaching tools, opportunities to experience the joy of scientific discovery and problem solving, and mastery of the subject matter.
- To graduate many outstanding science and math teachers/leaders every year who are masters of their discipline, know how to use technology to enhance learning, and who can understand and involve students in scientific inquiry.
How teachHOUSTON Can Benefit You
Have you considered teaching math or science but are unsure that teaching’s for you? Or maybe you know that teaching’s a smart choice but want hands-on experience now? If so, teachHOUSTON can jump-start your teaching career.
If you’re interested in teaching secondary science and math, you no longer have to wait until you’re almost ready to graduate to get in front of a classroom. Because you begin teaching your first semester in the program, this also helps you decide if teaching is right for you.
- Obtain public classroom teaching experience early in your college career.
- Complete your math or science degree and be certified to teach in as little as four years.
- Teach in a public school during five of your eight teachHOUSTON courses.
- Receive professional mentoring from master teachers at UH and mentor teachers in the public schools, even after graduation.
- Make a difference in your community by becoming a teacher.
How teachHOUSTON Works
- Begin teaching in a public classroom from the first semester. Participants will have taught between fifteen and twenty lessons at the elementary, middle, and high-school levels before beginning their student teaching semester.
- In addition to a degree in math or science, participants take twenty hours of education courses and will receive a teaching certificate in grades 8-12.
- teachHOUSTON classes create a “cohort” structure, in which peers who enter at the same time are encouraged to move through the program together, learning from and motivating one another.
